Only the best is good enough

  The Annual Visit to PGL

    Caythorpe Court 2007

This year a group of more than 70 children travelled to Grantham to visit one of PGL’s newest centres.

This was a first for the school who have visited another PGL centre in Shropshire for more than 20 years.

Caythorpe Court is much closer than the centre in Shropshire and the journey was a smooth one.  The children were all very excited about the weekend ahead.

When we arrived at Caythorpe Court the children were introduced to the Leaders that would be looking after them over the weekend.  Although the children would meet lots of other leaders on the activities, Rose and JD looked after our group the whole time we were there.

The Accommodation blocks were basic but clean and had en-suite facilities.  Most rooms had four children in them.

At meal times everyone went across to the canteen which had only just opened.  The food was good and there was a choice, most of the children found something they liked.

Of course the most exciting part of the weekend was the activities.  There was a huge range of activities and the children were split into small groups to do these.

Among the activities were abseiling which although quite scary nearly all of the children had a go at.  Some of the staff gave it a try too!

Everyone was harnessed up and given a safety talk.    Some of our children who braved the tower.

Mr Brown showing us all how it’s done!

There were loads of other exciting activities including Rifle shooting, Archery, Aeroball and Fencing to name but a few.

Another activity not for the faint hearted was Jacob’s Ladder.  The children had to help each other climb to the top of the ladder by pulling on each others ropes or just holding on to each other.  Children who weren’t climbing were in charge of pulling on the ropes and making sure that rope wasn’t trailing on the floor.

The Zip wire was also very popular and quite a few of the staff were brave enough to have a go on this.

Mrs Snell and Mrs Broughton preparing to take the plunge!        It’s not that bad after all!

The children also took part in Quad Biking, unfortunately they wouldn’t allow the grown ups to do this.

One of the most enjoyable activities, well the adults thought so, was the raft building.  I am sure you can imagine that it meant getting very very wet!  Several children discovered that their raft building skills were perhaps not as good as they could have been!

Row I said, my feet are getting wet!!!     Where are the rest of the crew?    I thought they said abandon ship!

  Can you guess what’s coming?

Yes, you guessed right!!!

Some of the staff also had a go at raft building.  There was a certain sense of trepidation.

Mrs White needn’t look so worried she got to stay on dry land!!!

Mr Brown excelled and showed off his vast array of knot tying skills.  We think this must have been from when he was a boy scout!

Unfortunately there are no pictures of the ‘Good ship Barcroft’ in its finished state but it was an impressive craft complete with masts!  Largely due to Mr. Brown’s ship building skill it was also ‘pond’ worthy much to everyone’s surprise.  I am sure that you will also be pleased to know that the three person crew of Mr. Brown, Mrs. Lacey and Mrs. Snell got suitably wet!

It was an action packed weekend and everyone came away with some good memories.
