School Action Plus
At School Action Plus Stage, the school calls upon external specialist support to help the pupil make progress. At this stage the SENCO continues to take the lead in co-ordinating the childs special educational provision, working closely with the childs teacher and sharing responsibilities with external specialist services relevant to the childs needs. Using all available information, the SENCO will decide whether to:
  • seek further advice;
  • ask the class teacher to draw up an IEP, including the involvement of the support services.
Parents should be informed in person of the action taken.
School Action Plus Stage Individual Education Plan
The SENCO, working with the class teacher and with the help of outside specialists, should ensure that an IEP is drawn up by the class teacher. This must include strategies which are additional to and different from those at school action. The plan will normally be implemented at least in part within the normal classroom setting. Parents should be invited to school to discuss the IEP with the teacher, if the parents do not attend, the IEP should be sent home. This is the responsibility of the class teacher. The plan should set out:
  • nature of the childs difficulty;
  • action, special educational provision;
  • external specialists involved, including frequency and timing;
  • specific programme, additional or different to those at School Action, activities and equipment;
  • help from parents at home;
  • targets to be achieved time scale;
  • pastoral care medical arrangements;
  • monitoring assessments;
  • review arrangements.
School Action Plus Review
Reviews are carried out termly. Parents must be invited to discuss the IEP review with the class teacher. If they do not attend, a copy of the review should be sent home. This is the responsibility of the class teacher.
Reviews should focus on:
  • progress;
  • effectiveness of IEP;
  • parents contribution;
  • updated information and advice;
  • future action;
  • whether the child is likely in the future to be referred for statutory assessment.
Future action
  • continue at School Action Plus Stage, set new targets;
  • move to refer for formal assessment;
  • revert to School Action Stage.
