Pupil Discipline

A Policy of Assertive Discipline for Positive Behaviour
Our school is committed to making sure that every child is given the opportunity to learn in an environment that is calm and positive. It is a policy that has been set up in partnership with parents. It is through working together to prevent behaviour problems from occurring that we teach children to make responsible decisions regarding their behaviour, both in the classroom and school environment.
Parents and school governors have taken part in discussions and have been informed of the school policy. The letter at the end of the document is an example of one that is sent out to parents when the new policy is started each academic year.

In creating the learning environment we require, we have established that:

  • We as teachers have the right and responsibility to establish rules and directions that clearly define what we require the children to do what is acceptable and unacceptable behaviour.
  • We have the right and responsibility to teach children to consistently follow our rules and directions throughout the school day.
  • We have the right to ask for help and for children to inform parents when support is needed.

Classroom rules

In order to establish positive teaching environments, a set of rules have been established in each classroom. The following rules are the common core. Within each classroom one or two other rules have been included. These may sometimes change, but children are always involved in the changes. Consequences and rewards are also similar in each classroom, but the principles remain the same.

  • Follow directions
  • Keep hands, feet, objects and thoughts to yourself
  • Put hand up to speak

Consequences

The consequences of a child deciding to break the established rules of the classroom are as follows:

ü                                 1 minute in a break time

üü                              5 minutes out of class

üüü                           20 minutes in another class

üüüü                        telephone call home/letter

üüüüü                     internal exclusion until parents are seen

In absence of headteacher or deputy, child to be sent to another member of the senior management team.

In the case of a severe clause – same as üüüüü telephone call and detention.

Severe clause:

  • fighting in class
  • foul language
  • refusal to obey
  • throwing objects
  • hitting staff
  • abusive talk back

A detention will last for one hour (3.10 – 4.10pm). The child will be supervised by a member of the senior management team and classwork will be provided for the child to complete during the detention. Parents will be given 24 hours notice of the detention.

Should a child receive üüüüü on two occasions in one week, they will be given two after school detentions over two consecutive days. Parents will be given 24 hours notice of the detention.

At lunchtime, a different system is run. If a child breaks the rules of the school whilst in the playground, they receive a yellow card. The yellow card could be given for any one of the following:
rudeness being in school without permission
swearing upsetting other children deliberately
arguing  refusing to do as a lunchtime supervisor asks
inappropriate use of the playground equipment
If a child is given two yellow cards in one day, they are automatically given a red card.
Should a child get two yellow cards in one week, they will automatically be given an after school detention. The detention will last for one hour (3.10 – 4.10pm) and will be supervised by a member of the senior management team. Parents will be informed of the detention and given 24 hours notice.
In severe cases, for example violence or running out of school, a child could be given a red card.
Should a child be given two red cards in one week, they will automatically be given two after school detentions over two consecutive days. Each detention will last for one hour.

Should a child continue to receive red cards, at the Headteacher’s discretion, they will be excluded from school at lunchtime. This means the child will receive a fixed term exclusion for half a day. This is kept on record by the Local Authority.

Rewards
Special rewards for good behaviour are given out in each class.
These rewards are given to individual children or to the class as a whole. The rewards are earned on an individual basis, set up in each class. They may include the following:
Award certificates to take home Special Individual stickers Extra playtime
Extra time on activity of their choice Award points, merits etc.
At the beginning of the term the assertive discipline programme is taught to all children. It is important that all new children to the school and their parents are informed about the school discipline plan and given a copy of the class letter to enlist their positive support from the beginning.
Throughout the school year time will be given to re visit the policy on a regular basis during staff meeting time. This is to refocus the policy and to ensure that it is consistently used throughout the school.
