Curriculum

We aim to provide a broad, well balanced progressive learning experiences in order to deliver the National Curriculum.

The National Curriculum comprises;
  • Subjects, three core - Mathematics, English, Science and seven foundation subjects which must be included in the curriculum of all pupils - History, Geography, Art, ICT, Design and Technology, P.E, R.E. and PSHCE.
  • Attainment targets, these enable us to set clear objectives for the childrens' learning;
  • Programmes of study, these specify content,what we should teach the children;
  • Assessment arrangements, these help us to identify how well the children are doing. Teachers carry out on going assessments, these are backed up at the end of each year by nationally validated tests.
Over the last few years we have been refining the curriculum we deliver to the children to meet the requirements of the National Curriculum. One of the priorities in this year's school improvement plan is to enrich the curriculum. As a priority we are enhancing the profile of music and PSHCE in the school and have included the teaching of French or Spanish for all our pupils in the curriculum. The possibilities of developing aspects of the core subjects in the context of the foundation subjects are fully explored where appropriate. Our approach to the curriculum is based on providing the children with experiences through which they learn most effectively. A variety of approaches are adopted, ranging from sharply focused integrated themes to specific subject teaching, organised in ability groups.
The curriculum also includes Personal Social Health Education and Citizenship where relevant with the coverage across the curriculum of gender, aspects of multicultural issues and exploring local topical issues in the news. Members of the community are invited into school to share knowledge.
