Year 3 Literacy 

Term 1 - Fiction and Poetry

The children will read extracts from stories with familiar settings; plays; poems based on observation and the senses; shape poems. 

Term 2 - Fiction and Poetry 

The children will read extracts from myths, legends, fables, parables; traditional stories, stories with related themes; oral and performance poetry form different cultures.

Term 3 - Fiction and Poetry 

The children will read extracts from adventure and mystery stories; stories by the same author; humorous poetry, poetry that plays with language, word puzzles, puns and riddles.

Term 1 - Non Fiction 

The children will read extracts from information books on topics of interest. They will study non-chronological reports and use thesauruses and dictionaries.

Term 2 - Non Fiction

The children will use books with instructions, dictionaries without illustrations and thesauruses. 

Term 3 - Non Fiction 

The children will read letters written for a range of purposes: to recount, explain, enquire, congratulate, complain and so on. They will also use alphabetic texts, directories, encyclopedias and indexes.

   Year 4 Literacy

Term 1 - Fiction and Poetry 

The children will read extracts from historical stories and short novels; playscripts and poems based on common themes eg. families and school.

Term 2 - Fiction and Poetry 

The children will read extracts from stories/novels about imagined worlds; classic and modern poetry, including poems from different cultures and times.

Term 3 - Fiction and Poetry 

The children will read extracts from stories/short novels that raise issues such as bullying; stories by the same author, stories form other cultures. A range of poetry in different forms such as lists, alphabets, conversations, monologues, rhyming forms and free verse.

 Term 1 - Non Fiction

The children will read extracts from a range of text-types from reports and articles in newspapers and magazines. They will also identify features of instructional texts.

Term 2 - Non Fiction

The children will use information books on the same or similar themes. They will also identify the key features of explanatory texts.

 Term 3 - Non Fiction

 The children will read, compare and evaluate examples of arguments and discussions used in persuasive writing. They will also use information books linked to other curricular areas.
