Medicines in School

We follow the guidance given by the Health and Safety Executive in our policy with regard to medicines in school. Children who have inhalers for asthma are allowed to bring medication to school, if the appropriate documentation is completed*. Inhalers should be given to their class teacher and may be left in their care. If your child is on medication that needs to be given during the day, you may come into school to give your child the medicine.

Staff are not allowed to administer medicine**.

I'm sorry for any inconvenience that this may cause, but I'm sure that you will appreciate the dangers involved if medicines were mixed up or the wrong dose given.

** If your child is prescribed 'Ritalin' please contact Mrs Lacey or Ms E Emson to discuss the issue.

Medication which has been prescribed to combat behaviour problems such as Ritalin, should be brought into school by a adult and handed to a member of the first aid team. Children SHOULD NOT bring medication into school.

There are four members of staff trained in first aid:-  Mrs M White, Mr M Myall, Mrs L Wallis and Mrs E Snell

Headlice

If you discover that your child has Headlice, please inform the school immediately as your child may have picked them up from someone else. We will arrange to inform all parents of the problem so that the necessary preventative measures can be taken.

If it is evident that a child has head lice you will be asked to deal with the problem immediately.

Infectious Illnesses

If your child develops one of the more infectious illnesses he/she should not return to school until after the minimum exclusion period.

Illness Exclusion Period
Chicken Pox Six days from the onset of the rash.
Measles Seven days from the onset of the rash.
Mumps Until swellings have subsided.
German Measles Four days from the onset of the rash.

Medical Treatment

If you are taking your child out of school for treatment at the Doctors, Dentists, Health Clinic please let us know. Should your child have an accident in school and need hospital treatment, it is not the policy of the school for a member of staff to transport the child. In such a situation, if parents do not have transport, either an ambulance or a taxi will be called depending on the severity of the situation.

Illness

If your child is absent from school please send them with an explanatory note when they return. If the illness is for a period longer than three days please telephone or send a note. If you wish it is possible for us to send work home.

Other Illnesses

Schools are breeding grounds for all sorts of bugs. If you suspect that your child has picked up a bug, do please keep them at home until they are better.
