Playground Improvements |
|
Since September last year we have been trying to improve our playground. We have felt for a long time that we have needed to improve the play opportunities available to children during break and lunch time. Mrs Ridley and Mrs Snell were given the task of working together to try and come up with ways to make the playground a happier and more exciting place. The first stage in this process was to develop a plan. This was done after meeting with the School Council and finding out what the children themselves wanted to see in the playground. The general feeling was that the playground should be zoned. The next stage was to decide on the different zones. It was decided that there would be a quiet zone for children that didn’t want to run about or play games, a zone for traditional games such as marbles and jacks, a zone for small ball games and small equipment and of course the football pitch which was already there. The children were shown the proposed plan of the zones. School Council were also involved in deciding upon some rules for the playground and on a rota for football. The children had also expressed an interest in having line markings and possibly some art work on the playground. At this stage there was not the funding available to progress this part of the plan. However Mrs Ridley and Mrs Snell had been allowed to purchase some equipment and had also been allowed to use some of the Sainsbury’s vouchers to get equipment. Mrs Ridley and Mrs Snell held an assembly and showed the whole school the playground plan and some of the new equipment. The new equipment included things such as cup and ball, skipping ropes, kick flicks and bean bags. Over the course of the year other equipment has also been purchased such as noughts and crosses and skittles, a popular one is the rip tag game. During April some money was made available for the playground and we were able to have some markings put on the playground. These markings included a tri-hopscotch, a happy exercise trail, a compass and a target. They have proved very popular with the children. We were also able to purchase some small benches for the quiet area. This is only the story so far as there are lots of other things that we would like to do but do not have the funding at present. Future plans include having some planters in the quiet area and having some art work on the walls. We also need to replenish equipment as inevitably things get lost or broken. Watch this space for further developments! |
